Cottey College
Nevada, MO 64772
This college was founded by Virginia Alice Cottey Stockard in 1884 and is believed to be haunted by a piano-playing ghost. The spirit is said to be that of Vera Neitzert, a student from 1920 who died when her clothes caught fire while she was cooking candy. Her ghost has been spotted in Main Hall and the former Rosemary Hall. Another spirit who may be the piano player is Madame Blitz, a turn-of-the-century music department head who drank carbolic acid and died across the street in her home.

I attended Cottey from 2009-2011. I stayed in Reeves Hall, 3rd floor. What I experienced was pretty cool and scary at the same time. My roommate and I would always hear what sounded like someone above us was moving/dragging furniture across the floor late at night but all that was above us was the attic and no one would be up there. One night while we were sleeping we heard this thud in our room and glass shattering and her picture frame actually fell off the wall and onto the floor. Another time I was walking back into the suite from class and all the cupboards on our kitchen were open but none of my suite mates were there. There are also stories of the man in black who, if you leave your desk chair out in your dorm room, he will sit in it at the foot of your bed. I’m pretty sure all basements will be scary to me, Reeves hall basement by far, though, gives me the creepiest vibes to this day. I hated doing laundry down there.

I am a current Cottey student that lives in Robertson hall. I have heard of Vera, but not the piano-playing ghost. My suitemates and I have experienced strange going ons however. The worst and creepiest would be the loud knocking on my roommates and my dorm door at 3:00 am every other day for the past two weeks as well as the sound of moving furniture at 5:00 am almost every morning from the vacant suite above us.
